Before anyone can be approved for LASIK or any laser vision correction, a thorough consultation is required — and that's where we come in. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes, review your medical and ocular history, and determine whether you're a good candidate for the procedure. If you're a candidate, we'll refer you to a trusted refractive surgeon for the procedure itself and continue to support you through your care.
How LASIK Works
LASIK uses a highly precise ultraviolet laser to reshape the cornea. How the cornea is reshaped depends on your specific vision needs — a farsighted patient typically needs a steeper reshaping, while a nearsighted patient needs the cornea flattened. LASIK can also smooth an irregular cornea, which is why it's also used to correct astigmatism.
The procedure itself is fast — the surgical suite visit takes about half an hour, though the actual laser treatment is only a couple of minutes per eye. Most of that time is spent on preparation and ensuring your comfort. Anesthetic eye drops make the process pain-free, and mild sedation may be available for anxious patients — something to discuss with your surgeon ahead of time. During surgery, a femtosecond laser creates a thin, circular flap in the outer cornea, which is gently lifted to reveal the underlying tissue (the stroma) so it can be reshaped. The laser follows a precise, pre-programmed path unique to your eyes. Once reshaping is complete, the flap is placed back over the eye — no stitches or bandages needed, as the cornea begins healing on its own right away.
Recovery from LASIK
After your surgery, your eyes may feel a little sore, scratchy or itchy, but this should resolve relatively quickly. Blurriness is also expected, but again this should disappear within a few days. After being discharged you will need to have someone pick you up, as you will not be allowed to drive until our doctor has seen you the following day and confirmed that your eyesight meets the legal standard for driving. In most cases, you will be asked to refrain from doing any intense physical activity for at least a week while your eyes begin to heal, but you should be able to return to work within 48/72 hours of your procedure.
Are there any risks associated with LASIK?
LASIK is considered to be extremely safe, and any side effects are minimal and disappear within a few days. However, a very small number of people do report complications following LASIK, which can range from mild problems such as itching, painful or watery eyes to more serious side effects like a bulging cornea or extreme dry eye.
