Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome

A few decades ago, computer vision syndrome (CVS) barely existed. Today, with screens woven into daily life, it's one of the most common eye complaints we see.

The more time spent on screens, the more strain on your eyes. CVS behaves somewhat like other repetitive strain conditions, similar to carpal tunnel syndrome — your eyes move in the same pattern for hours at a time, and left unaddressed, that strain builds. Screens add extra strain beyond regular reading, through flicker, glare, and light exposure print material doesn't have.

There is currently no proof that CVS causes long-term vision impairment or blindness. Continuing to use a computer or any other type of screen can continue to be an annoyance or reduce your ability to see properly. Some of the warning signs of CVS are:

  • Red or dry eyes

  • Headaches

  • Neck pain

  • Back pain

  • Eye Irritation
     

If you don’t properly treat CVS when these symptoms occur, you may begin to notice that you suffer from a decrease in overall quality of life or job performance.

Treatment Options

Reduce Glare
Glare adds unnecessary strain on your eyes, so cutting it down helps. Angle your screen so it's not reflecting light back at you, dim overhead lighting, or reposition your monitor away from windows. A glare filter or an anti-reflective coating (ARC) on your glasses lenses can also make a big difference.

Position Your Desk Right
Your monitor should sit 20 degrees below eye level, about 20 to 28 inches away from your face, angled slightly so it's not reflecting light back at you. You shouldn't need to tilt your head or crane your neck to see it clearly.

Adjust Your Screen Settings
Small tweaks to brightness, contrast, and font size can meaningfully reduce eye strain — and they only take a minute to set up.

Keep Your Prescription Current
The less work your eyes have to do, the better. Keeping your prescription up to date reduces unnecessary strain.
