Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a specially designed, overnight vision correction lens that gently and non-surgically reshapes the cornea to correct refractive error. It is worn overnight while you sleep — usually 7-8 hours minimum and in the morning, you remove the lenses and see clearly all day, with no glasses or daytime contacts needed.

Ortho-K is typically suited for mild-to-moderate nearsightedness (roughly -1D to -6D) with small amounts of astigmatism, and is one of the treatment options we offer for slowing myopia progression in children and teens

How it helps control myopia

The overnight correcting lens shape redirects light so that images focus slightly in front of the retina in the peripheral field of vision — a pattern called myopic peripheral defocus. This is believed to signal the eye to slow its axial growth, which is the elongation responsible for worsening nearsightedness over time.

What to expect

  • Lenses are worn nightly, removed each morning

  • Clear daytime vision without corrective lenses

  • Regular follow-up visits to monitor fit and eye health

  • A period of adjustment while your eyes adapt to treatment

Orthokeratology

Overnight correcting lenses are designed to reshape the cornea temporarily, and the effects are fully reversible. When you stop wearing the lenses, the cornea gradually returns to its original shape within about two weeks. This reversibility occurs because the lenses apply gentle mechanical pressure to the cornea, redistributing the corneal epithelium and creating a negative pressure zone that alters its curvature.

As with any overnight lens wear, there is a risk of complications such as microbial keratitis (corneal infection), which is why proper fit, compliance with wear/cleaning instructions, and regular follow-up are essential to minimizing risk.
